The $34 million beach re-nourishment project along the Grand Strand is on hold temporarily, thanks to Hurricane Florence, reports the Myrtle Beach City Government.
According to the report, the contractor – Great Lakes Dredge and Dock – finished work in Garden City and Surfside Beach (SC) this weekend.
Instead of beginning the Myrtle Beach part of the scheme, the contractor is demobilizing and removing equipment from the beach, in advance of Hurricane Florence, the city announced.
The officials also added that work will resume once the threat has ended and the contractor remobilizes. At that point, renourishment would begin at Withers Swash, with pipes headed toward 29th Avenue South.
Myrtle Beach received $24,928,500 in federal emergency funding through Flood Control and Coastal Emergencies (FCCE) to cover 100% of the beach fill element of the project.
The city has requested state funding assistance for $450,000 in association with a South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation & Tourism (SCPRT) Beach Re-nourishment Funding Assistance Grant to cover the dune restoration element (fencing and grassing).
