Progress continues on construction of the breakwaters out at Grand Isle, Louisiana.
Construction partners with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New Orleans District, have now completed two of the 31 breakwaters scheduled to be built on the gulf side of this barrier island off the coast of south Louisiana.
Grand Isle is Louisiana’s largest and last inhabited barrier island. Barrier islands are critical natural coastal features that reduce storm damage and coastal erosion for the mainland areas behind the islands as well as support marine fisheries, biodiversity and coastal economies, USACE said.
This construction is part of the Grand Isle and Vicinity Project, and these breakwaters are designed to improve the resiliency of hurricane and storm damage features on the island as well as reduce beach erosion by reducing wave action along the barrier island’s Gulf-facing shoreline.
