The Plymouth Historical Society will host attorney F. Charles Petrillo of Wilkes-Barre who will speak on “The Susquehanna Navy: The River Coal Dredging Industry in Northeastern Pennsylvania” on Thursday, January 14, in the senior center of Dan Flood Apartments in Plymouth, PA.
Petrillo will present several slides as part of a broader discussion of the region’s extensive river dredging operations in pursuit of anthracite.
Coal found its way into local waterways through various means and was eventually mined, processed and sent to market.
The dredging continued in the Wyoming Valley into the 1950s, and lasted in the lower anthracite fields into the 1990s. River dredging constituted an important and often under-appreciated aspect of Northeastern Pennsylvania’s coal mining history.
The event is the first of 13 public programs during Mining History Month in Luzerne and Lackawanna counties and is free to the public.
