The Port of London Authority said that the dredging operations will take place at South-West India Dock Entrance on or about September 28.
"These dredging operations will be carried out by vessel Rijn using the water injection dredging method and will be conducted during ebb tides only. An alternate vessel may be substituted for Rijn if necessary," the Authority said.
Water injection dredging is a dredging technique that removes sediment ‘the natural way’. It is an environmentally friendly way of maintaining the navigable depth of ports and waterways. A water injection dredger can work very close to embankments and quay walls because of the maneuverability of the vessel.
Van Oord's dredger Rijn is equipped with hybrid energy management systems. This diesel-electric water injection dredger complies with the IMO TIER III legislation for reducing harmful NOx emissions and take into account the EU STAGE V legislation.
