Construction work is underway to place sand where it is needed most at Presque Isle State Park, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Buffalo District said.
A total of $3 million in federal and nonfederal funding has been secured for fall 2026 and spring 2027 beach nourishment and sand stockpiling.
Under the initial task order, the USACE Buffalo District will place approximately 30,000 cubic yards of sand in targeted areas at Beaches 5, 6, 7 and 10, as well as Mill Road. Work is underway and scheduled for completion by November.
This effort advances the Army’s Building Infrastructure, Not Paperwork initiative and helps protect the nearly 7-mile Presque Isle Peninsula, which forms a natural breakwater for Erie Harbor’s shipping channel, USACE said.
Erie Harbor handled 977,000 tons of cargo in 2023 and supports nearly $34 million in economic impact and more than 100 jobs.
