During the dredging operations off the Belgian coast earlier this week, an old German sea mine was accidentally sucked up and became wedged inside the dredger's suction equipment, the Belgian Navy said.

The emergency response was coordinated through the Maritime Information Crossroads (MIK).

Upon arrival, the Belgium's explosive ordnance disposal unit DOVO safely extracted the mine from the dredger.

The Belgian Navy said that the bomb was then placed onto the naval patrol vessel Pollux and transported to a designated safe zone offshore, where the team conducted a controlled underwater detonation.
