Last weekend, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers closed off the season for placing stone at Mouth of the Columbia River South Jetty.
Rehabilitating the 6-mile MCR South Jetty is one of the biggest projects the Portland District has undertaken as a district since the structure was originally built in the late 1800s.
MCR South Jetty is the longest jetty in the nation, and its current 6-year rehabilitation, which finishes next fall, is the largest jetty construction effort in the country.
The contractor J.E. McAmis, who are doing the on-the-ground work to make this rehab possible, ended their stone placement last weekend because of unfavorable near-term weather conditions.
Jetty construction season lengths and times depend on the location of the jetty and the scale of the project, but here at the Mouth of the Columbia, the season typically begins in the spring and wraps up around early fall.
Next spring, the Corps and J.E. McAmis will begin the last year of this rehab project.
