Jan De Nul’s giant TSHD Galileo Galilei busy in Brazil

Dredging

Jan De Nul’s giant trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD) Galileo Galilei is busy working in Brazil, at the Port of Rio de Janeiro.

With a total investment of 163 million reais ($32.4 million), PortosRio is carrying out the dredging operations to deepen the port’s access channel from 15.5 to 16.2 meters.

According to the officials, this initiative aims not only to increase transport capacity but also to prepare the site to accommodate the ships of the future.

With the new draft, the Port of Rio de Janeiro will be able to serve the vessels measuring 366 meters in length and with a capacity of around 15,000 TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Unit).

The project is expected to be completed by August 2024.
