The Cassowary Coast Regional Council (QLD) will soon be undertaking beach nourishment works at South Mission Beach.
Starting next week, the nourishment works will consist of relocating sand dredged from Tully River to a 700m section of beach at Kennedy Esplanade, between Jackey Jackey Street and Owen Street.
The goal is to restore and enhance the beach’s width and volume, protecting valuable coastal properties and maintaining valuable recreation areas.
To ensure public safety, beach access will be limited around the works site when nourishment activities are taking place. Council urges residents to show patience and cooperation in regards to these important works.
Coastal nourishment works are a priority action that is identified in Council’s Coastal Hazard Adaptation Strategy (CHAS), funded by the Queensland Government’s QCoast2100 Program.
The program aims to enhance the long-term resilience and sustainability of coastal communities and assets by planning for potential impacts like rising sea levels and coastal hazards across Queensland’s coastline.
