The first phase of dredging work to remove historic contamination from Bellingham Bay in front the Shipping Terminal project is nearly complete.
The contaminated sediments have been removed and are being transported by rail car to a certified landfill in eastern Oregon for permanent disposal.
Construction crews are now placing a clean sandy top layer sourced locally from Cowden Gravel & Ready Mix.
In addition to protecting the environment, the dredging work will increase the navigation depth at the main pier from -26 feet to -35 feet mean low water, allowing a wider range of potential cargo.
