The Town of Fort Myers Beach, Florida, yesterday commenced work on the Estero Island Beach Sand Truck Haul project.
The project will place 112,000 tons of beach compatible sand from Stewart Mine in Immokalee onto Fort Myers Beach to replace sand eroded away by Hurricane Ian.
The work area on the beach extends from Margaritaville south to Big Carlos Pass. Beach construction activities will initially focus on South Estero Island onto Carlos Pointe Beach, filling in scours and raising the elevation of the beach to pre‐Ian conditions.
The project will continue North installing and repairing the sand berm and filling in scours. This project is funded by a Florida Department of Emergency Management grant appropriated by the Florida Legislature.
The Town is also working on the Estero Island Shoreline Protection Project, also known as the Beach Renourishment Project, that will dredge approximately 1 million cubic yards of sand from offshore to construct an engineer designed beach. This project is in the pre-bid process, and scheduled to begin in late spring / early summer of 2024.
