The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District’s Deputy Commander for South Florida, Lt. Col. Todd Polk, assisted in the ground breaking for the CEPP New Water Seepage Barrier Wall Project last week.
Its mission, when completed, will help to improve water levels in the Everglades and assist with the mitigation of community flooding.
According to USACE, the project will build five miles of new underground wall to support restoration flows of water south and flood mitigation for communities.
“With our partners at the South Florida Water Management District, we have broken ground, completed, or hit major milestones on over 50 projects in partnership,” said Polk.
“We also want to acknowledge and give thanks to our other federal, state, and local agencies including Everglades National Park, Florida Department of Environmental Protection, Miami-Dade County, and more.”
The project extends the successful underground wall built earlier this year in the 8.5 Square Mile Area Seepage Wall Project.
