Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Co. (GLDD) is about to begin the 2022 beach nourishment project in the Town of Nags Head, North Carolina.
According to the latest update, the beach construction originally planned for July 13, may be delayed a few days due to weather.
“Construction is being delayed due to expected high surf, so the project start may be delayed a few days.” the town said.
The project, taking place over the next two months, includes dredging of approx. 975,000 cubic yards of beach-quality sand and placing it along a 4.5-mile section of oceanfront shoreline.
The work will start from 8031 South Old Oregon Inlet Road (Comfort Inn South) near Mile Post 16 south to Nags Head’s corporate limits abutting Cape Hatteras National Seashore near Mile Post 21.
In mid-to-late August, a second dredge will arrive at the site and begin construction near 9021 South Old Oregon Inlet Road (station 888), progressing south to near 9405 South Old Oregon Inlet Road (station 920).
Then, construction will return to near 9021 South Old Oregon Inlet Road and proceed north to near 8645 South Old Oregon Inlet Road (station 855). This phase of construction should be completed by the end of August or the beginning of September.
