Napier Port has a major project underway to build a new wharf that will support continued growth for the region and the port’s customers.

The 6 Wharf development scheme – one of the biggest port construction projects in New Zealand in recent times – will reduce congestion, allow handling of larger larger ships, extend the port’s container vessel capacity, etc.

To build 6 Wharf and welcome more and bigger ships, Napier Port needed to create a new vessel turning area and deepen parts of the harbour using a dredge so ships can safely use the wharf.

The new wharf will be long enough and the berth pocket deep enough to handle the largest ships the port expects will visit Hawke’s Bay into the future.

Construction of 6 Wharf is progressing ahead of time and under budget, and set to open in July 2022.
