Gov. John Bel Edwards and the Louisiana Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA) have announced a state commitment of $6 million to the South Lafourche Levee District for levee and floodwall improvements on the Larose to Golden Meadow Levee System.
This funding is in addition to the $26.6 million announced last month for flood protection projects in the South Lafourche Levee District.
The project consists of a 48-mile ring levee system composed of approximately 47 miles of earthen levees with the remaining composed of A-frame I-walls and T-walls. Construction on the project began in 1976.
“ Investing in levee protection in South Lafourche easily hits multiple objectives outlined in our Coastal Master Plan, ” said CPRA Chairman Chip Kline . “ We are building the resilience of this entire area by matching today’s levee protection investment with the recent restoration of the barrier headlands at Caminada and other upcoming and planned marsh creation projects outside the levee system .”
CPRA is providing $2 million via the Gulf of Mexico Energy Security Act (GOMESA) and an additional $4 million will come from state surplus funds.
The Larose to Golden Meadow Hurricane Protection project also protects critical infrastructure which allows Port Fourchon and Grand Isle to access the state’s roadways and waterways.
