The City of Isle of Palms said that the first phase of their beach renourishment project is complete more than two weeks ahead of schedule.
Marinex, the dredging contractor, finished work on Reach 1 in 35 days. Crews placed approximately 900,000 cubic yards of sand along the shoreline from Mariner’s Walk to Dewees Inlet.
Following the completion of Reach 1, crews immediately mobilized to Reach 2. Within 24 hours, workers began pumping sand near the Wild Dunes Property Owners Beach House.
During this second phase, crews will place approximately 800,000 cubic yards of sand between the Beach House and 56th Avenue. Coastal engineers estimate Reach 2 will take about 45 days to complete, depending on weather conditions and equipment maintenance.
Once Reach 2 is finalized, the project will move to its third and final phase.
Reach 3 will cover the south end of the island from the Isle of Palms Pier to Breach Inlet, adding another 800,000 cubic yards of sand.
