The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District, recently awarded a contract for the maintenance dredging in the River Rouge.
Ryba Marine Construction Company from Cheboygan, Michigan, will receive almost $736,000 to dredge the River Rouge in southwest Detroit, Michigan, reported the Army Corps.
Under the contract, the company will remove approximately 66,500 cubic yards of shoal material from Dix Road to the I-75 Highway.
Material from the dredging project will be placed at the Pointe Mouillee Confined Disposal Facility at the mouth of the Huron River in western Lake Erie.
“ This contract to dredge the federal channel in the River Rouge is important to keeping this navigation project open for movement of cargo critical to local and national industry ,” said Dave Wright, chief of operations, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District .
Dredging of the navigation channel is separate from the Lower Rogue River Old Channel clean-up project and is scheduled to begin in late April 2019 and should be completed by early June 2019.
While River Rouge and its tributaries total 125 miles of waterway, only the lower two and a half miles of the river are maintained as a shipping channel from the turning basin to the river’s mouth at the south end and joins the Detroit River at the westerly limit of the City of Detroit.
