The Sonoma County Water Agency has announced that the Annual Community Meeting on the Dry Creek Habitat Enhancement Project will take place on Thursday, January 14, from 6-8 p.m. at the Milt Brandt Visitors Center at Lake Sonoma.
Water Agency staff will provide updates on the status of the next phase of the project, discuss how the project’s effectiveness is being monitored, and discuss the importance of landowner partnerships.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers staff will provide an update on the Corps’ project plans, and there will be a presentation from the National Marine Fisheries Service.
The first mile of the project, known as the Demonstration Project, was completed in 2014.
Some elements of the project include bank stabilization to reduce erosion, anchored boulders to create small rapids, anchored log jams and slow-flowing side channels and backwaters to provide refuge for young fish to escape high summer and winter flows.
Habitat enhancement features are designed to minimize the effect on existing vineyard operations.
Since property along nearly all of the 14-miles of Dry Creek is privately owned, the Habitat Enhancement Project is dependent on partnerships with landowners.
