An International Seminar and Workshop on Hydrography was recently held in Batam, Indonesia.
Approximately 200 people attended the seminar, which consisted of a one-day conference and a two-day practical workshop for 25 budding hydrographic surveyors and data processors from the country.
The event was supported by the Geospatial Information Agency, the National Land Agency, the Hydro and Oceanographic office of the Navy, the Indonesian Surveyor Association and the Indonesian Hydrographic Society.
The Institute of Technology Bandung was responsible for the organization of the activities.
CARIS and Kongsberg ran the workshop component, which was split between the classroom and hands-on boat work.
The computer lab at Batam polytechnic was the ideal venue for the multibeam data processing course taught by CARIS’ Daniel Kruimel utilizing the latest CARIS HIPS and SIPS 8.1 software. A specially chartered vessel, which usually operates as a small passenger ferry, was the platform for the survey.
A Kongsberg GeoAcoustics, GeoSwath Plus sonar was mobilized by Marylou Gentilhomme of Kongsberg and her team of engineers from local firm, GeoTindo, and a tide gauge was set up to provide vertical control. Workshop attendees then took to the sea to conduct a small hydrographic survey, including the collection of sound velocity data.
The data from the survey was processed back in the classroom later that day and the workshop concluded with a certification ceremony.
“ The workshop was great success, ” said Seminar and Workshop organizer Dr. Samsul Bachri . “ Hydrography is very important for Indonesia, being the world’s largest archipelagic country means we have a very long coastline to understand and map .” He went on to say, “ being able to access the latest equipment from CARIS and Kongsberg was a unique opportunity which made the workshop very worthwhile. ”
