Berrien County is just waiting on the Michigan Department of Natural Resources approval to begin a dredging project on the St. Joseph River, reports wsjm.com.

The dredging project will remove between 9,000 and 10,000 cubic yards of sediment from the river from the DNR boat ramp to Benton Harbor.

Dredging is necessary because of the natural process of sedimentation,.

The area will have a deeper channel and be will be more usable for boats after dredging.

Although a portion of the St. Joseph River area was already dredged , the inner harbor part remained untouched .
