The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District, awards a contract for dredging at Duluth-Superior Harbor in western Lake Superior on the Minnesota-Wisconsin border.
The $1,393,900 contract was awarded to Roen Salvage Co., of Sturgeon Bay, Wis. The firm will dredge 114,000 cubic yards of material from the harbor and deposit the dredged material at the 21st Avenue West embayment, a shallow cove on the Duluth side of the harbor. The dredging will begin in mid-August and will be complete by mid-November.
“ The Corps of Engineers is pleased to award this contract which will keep Duluth-Superior Harbor open to commercial shipping traffic and provide dredged material for beneficial use in the restoration of 21st Avenue West, ” said Lt. Col. Robert Ells, district engineer. “ North America’s industrial and manufacturing heartland relies on the low-cost waterborne transportation of commodities such as iron ore, coal and limestone from Duluth-Superior Harbor. The cost savings realized from waterborne transportation of these commodities translates directly into more competitive American steel, lower cost energy, and lower cost concrete for construction in our cities and on our highways. ”
This contract was awarded under the Corps’ Multiple Award Task Order Contract, MATOC, which the Detroit District established with 10 companies capable of dredging in the Great Lakes. The MATOC is designed to provide greater flexibility and expedite the bid solicitation-award process for dredging in Great Lakes commercial shipping channels and harbors.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District, maintains a navigation system of 91 harbors and four connecting channels, including the channels joining lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, St. Clair and Erie.
