Despite some damage from Tropical Storm Debby, the Lafourche Parish officials said a restoration project aimed at rebuilding beach and dunes at West Belle Pass on Fourchon beach is nearly halfway completed.

According to houmatoday.com, Lafourche Parish Coastal Zone Administrator Archie Chaisson said the restoration project was moving along smoothly with 66 percent of the beach and dune recreation finished and 44 percent of the sand fencing up, which will help prevent erosion.

Called the West Belle Pass Headland project, the restoration work aims to rebuild about 8,500 feet of beach and dune with 1.7 million cubic yards of dredged sand. The project also involves building nearly 220 acres of marsh and 93 acres of dunes.

“The work was contracted to Weeks Marine dredging company of Cranford, N.J., which is pulling in material from 10 miles offshore to rebuild the beach,” Chaisson said.

The project should be completed in December.
