China Harbor Engineering Company (CHEC) is reconstructing the Apia Port breakwater on Samoa under 'Enhancing Safety, Security, and Sustainability of Apia Port Project', funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
This port is of vital importance for the islands economy and needed an upgrade to withstand severe cyclones in the South Pacific, Samoa Ports Authority said.
For this project, 48-ton Xblocs (16m3) are being placed in the area.
Because production of the specified quantities of large armor rock presented significant practical and economic challenges, an alternative breakwater design incorporating 2m³ Antifer Cubes as the underlayer was adopted.
The parties involved in the project are:
- Asian Development Bank (ADB),
- Samoa Ports Authority,
- China Harbor Engineering Co. Ltd,
- Beca,
- Delta Marine Consultants.
