Oyster farmers in the main oyster production area in NSW have welcomed a $400,000 dredging commitment by the State Government, reports abc.net.au.

Sand build-up in channels and on oyster leases in Wallis Lake has resulted in a significant drop in productivity.

“ There’s 23 oyster farming businesses in the port and I think they have all been affected in some way, and the majority of them have reduced in staff or reduced in their plans for the future because of the sand in the river. ”

said Wallis Lake grower, and president of the local oyster growers’ association, Stephen Verdich .

Dredging project is scheduled to begin in August.
