Congress has approved $4.16 million for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to dredge McKellar Lake.

This accounts for the largest dollar amount ever set apart for dredging of the McKellar harbor. Approximately $2.8 million came from a disaster relief bill and $850,000 was received for repair damage inside the mouth of McKellar Lake.

Valero refinery currently undergoing a $298 million expansion and Mitsubishi Electric, a $206 million electrical transformer factory being built in Rivergate Industrial Park, will be among beneficiaries as both will acquire direct access to the harbor entrance.

This dredging will improve harbor access for 10-15 years to come.
