West Beach and Henley Beach South will soon be replenished with more sand, the Government of South Australia said.
The work will involve up to 90,000 cubic metres of sand being collected from a nearshore area just south of North Haven Marina breakwater and delivered by barge to West Beach and Henley Beach South during September.
The program will be managed by the Department for Environment and Water (DEW) to help improve the resilience of Adelaide's coastline to storms and sea-level rise, maintain beach width and protect coastal infrastructure.
The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has approved a licence for the sand dredging operations to proceed following assessment of the project’s environmental management and monitoring plans and consideration of public submissions received during community consultation.
All dredging work is set to be regulated by the EPA and managed under an approved Dredge Management Plan, which sets out how dredging and sand placement will occur and how impacts to marine life, water quality and public health.
The work will be conducted as part of the State Government’s $190 million long-term strategy to manage erosion and sand build-up along the Adelaide coast from West Beach to North Haven.
