SS Keewatin Prepares to Leave Douglas (USA)

After more than four decades, an iconic ship SS Keewatin is leaving Douglas this week on its historic journey to Canada, according to wzzm13.com.

The Keewatin will return to the same Canadian port where it started more than 100 years ago.

It’s a mixed feeling of pride and sadness to see it go,” says Jim Wiley, Mayor of Douglas.

The new owners of the Keewatin paid for the harbor to be dredged so that the ship can leave. Peterson says he hopes that sends a message to the local government that improvements are needed.

Even with the recent dredging, the weather could pose a challenge for the trip home.

“The boat is 48 feet wide and they dredged the channel about 50 feet wide. If we have a little too much wind it might be a little dicey,” says Wiley.
