Shute Harbor seawall almost complete

Whitsunday Regional Council has just released the latest update on their Shute Harbor Restoration Program.

The Shute Harbor seawall is now 95% completed, with only a few remaining parts of the wall to be finished once the refurbished pontoons have been re-installed.

The last 5% of the seawall is expected to be completed by the end of January 2021.

The refurbished finger pontoons, which travelled to Townsville last year for restoring, will be returning to Shute Harbor over the next month and will be installed by the end of January 2021.

“There will be occasional night works over the next month to pour concrete for the new terminal building, with works beginning from midnight and going through to the morning,” the council said.

“By pouring the concrete during the cooler hours we can counteract the impact of hot days during the curing process, which can lead to cracking and unacceptable quality in the concrete.”

Nestled between the rainforest and the sea, close to the tourism and sailing mecca of Airlie Beach and the internationally acclaimed Whitsunday Islands, the deep natural inlet of Shute Harbor has been a thriving port since the early 1960’s.

The marine facility was badly damaged during Severe Tropical Cyclone Debbie in March 2017.

Restoration works to terminal buildings, jetties and pontoons are being undertaken by Whitsunday Regional Council, with eligible works jointly funded by the Commonwealth and Queensland Governments under the Natural Disaster Relief & Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA).
