Rockaway Inlet Dredging Plan Introduced

The New York District Army Corps of Engineers proposes to perform emergency dredging and beach nourishment for the Atlantic Coast of New York City, East Rockaway Inlet to Rockaway Inlet and Jamaica Bay Project, New York.

The work consists of dredging of the Federal Navigation channel and deposition basins at East Rockaway Inlet and the Federal Navigation Channel at Jamaica Bay with subsequent placement of the dredged material as nourishment along the designated feeder beach (Rockaway Beach, Queens County. NY).

The proposed maintenance dredging and beach nourishment work would involve a Basic Schedule that requires dredging and placement of approximately 1,500,000 cubic yards of material at Rockaway Beach. The East Rockaway Inlet project is scheduled to be dredged to a depth of 14 feet plus 2 feet allowable over-depth or deeper based on the availability of material. The Rockaway Inlet Federal Navigation Channel is scheduled to be dredged to a depth of 20 feet plus 2 feet allowable over-depth or deeper based on the availability of material.

The material dredged from the Inlets will be place along the Rockaway Beaches, approximately between Beach 19th Street and Beach 149th Street. The proposed work can be performed by either a pipeline or hopper dredge with pump-out capacity and an ability to withstand open ocean conditions.
