North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation (NQBP) has completed essential maintenance dredging at the Port of Weipa.
After completing an extended 63-day program, the dredger Brisbane and its supporting vessels have already departed the Port of Weipa.
The project removed around 1.16m3 of natural sediment from the Port of Weipa, which was placed at the approved Dredge Material Placement Area (DMPA) in Albatross Bay.
According to NQBP, this was a larger than usual dredge campaign, due to the impacts of severe weather over the summer season. Tropical Cyclone Narelle crossed Cape York Peninsula in March, with heavy rainfall, flooding and increased wave heights moving more sediment into the port's shipping channels.
Environmental monitoring and management measures were in place throughout the campaign to minimize any potential impact on the marine environment.
