According to DPWH Region 7 Director, Danilo J. Villa Jr., the rehabilitation of the Matutinao River Structure was necessary due to the area’s susceptibility to flooding.

The river serves as the catch basin of multi-layered and famous Kawasan waterfall system sitting at the foot of the Mantalungon Mountain Range.

The Matutinao River project included dredging and the construction of 114.5-meter riprap to prevent the overflow of the river, mitigating widespread flooding in the area.

The rehabilitation project also aids local tourism in Cebu and improves water quality, as the Matutinao River is considered as one of the cleanest rivers in the Philippines.
