The largest dredging project ever undertaken in Sweden is scheduled to begin in the spring of 2027.
The Malmporten Project in the Port of Luleå, to be conducted by Boskalis and Van Oord, will enable more efficient maritime transport to and from the port, supporting the industrial transformation taking place in northern Sweden. Growing production of iron ore, fossil‐free steel and other key commodities is increasing demand for larger and more efficient shipping capacity, the Swedish Maritime Administration said.
Between 2027 and 2030, around 40 kilometers (22 nautical miles) of fairway and the harbor basin will be dredged. In total, approximately 13 million cubic meters of material will be removed - equivalent in volume to around 23 Avicii Arenas.
The contract is valued at approximately SEK 5.7 billion (EUR 511 million), and the dredging works are scheduled for completion in August 2030.
