The Philippines Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Regional Office VIII, continues dredging operations along waterways in Samar and Leyte to mitigate flooding in these provinces.
According to DPWH, amphibious excavators have been deployed to dredge Maroyondoyon and Kaglangkoy Creek in Catarman, Northern Samar; Bangon River in Palo, Leyte; Taytayan River in Baybay, Leyte; Calbiga River in Calbiga, Samar; and waterways in Hilongos, Leyte.
Desilting the region’s major waterways is important to avoid overflowing along riverbanks when raining. “ With the weather situation here in our region, these dredging operations can help address any incidences of flooding especially during this rainy season ,” said DPWH 8 Regional Director Edgar B. Tabacon .
He added that Pagsanga-an River in Ormoc City is also set to be dredged and the office is only awaiting issuance of permit of DENR-Certificate of Non Coverage (CNC).
Meanwhile, dredging activities of Burayan Creek and Mangonbangon River, both in Tacloban City, have already been completed. A total of 54,000 cubic meters of silt was removed from Burayan Creek and 50,000 cubic meters from Mangonbangon River, respectively.
