The USACE New England District has received a permit application from the City of New Haven Engineering Department for a proposed work in New Haven Harbor waters at Long Wharf Park on Long Wharf Drive in New Haven, Connecticut.
The proposed work involves the permanent discharge of up to 11,410 cubic yards of stone, sand, gravel and cobble, as well as associated grading, below the high tide line over a 5.4-acre area of intertidal and shallow submerged mudflats.
The applicant proposes activity in estuarine waters, which seeks to raise the elevation of the tidal substrate, and the newly established sills and planted saltmarsh are intended to attenuate waves and reduce shoreline erosion for storm events.
Also, the living shoreline stabilization project will span a 3,400-linear-foot section of the New Haven Harbor coastline known as “Long Wharf” and Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park.
According to USACE, public comments on this proposed work should be submitted no later than March 21, 2024.
