“Beautiful sunrise this morning in Texas, where DB Avalon is dredging the Houston Shipping Channel,” Curtin Maritime said in yesterday’s update.

DB Avalon is a market-first, hybrid-powered dredge vessel designed and built by the company to be the most efficient and lowest carbon footprint vessel of its class.

The vessel is designed with fully automated dredging technology, two fixed spuds and two walking spuds, and all hydraulic mooring winches.

It’s capable of an all-electric operation with a shore power connection that will allow her to work as a truly zero-emissions dredge when working in ports with the supporting infrastructure.

Curtin Maritime, Corp. won the $99.8 million Houston Ship Channel dredging contract in mid-2022. The work includes dredging around 4.1 million cy of material from the Channel with deposit of materials into the Ocean Dredged Material Disposal Site (ODMDS).

DB Avalon, one of the largest clamshell dredges in North America, commenced dredging at the Barbours Cut Container Terminal in October 2022.
