Niagara County Legislator Dave Godfrey teamed up last week with Orleans County Legislature Chairwoman Lynne Johnson to present to the Great Lakes Dredging Team (GLDT) on small harbor and dredging management.

The purpose of the GLDT is to foster an exchange of information among participants, including the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, regarding various aspects of the dredging process and dredged material management.

Legislators Godfrey and Johnson specifically discussed the Lake Ontario Regional Dredging Council and the efforts to dredge the 19 harbors along Lake Ontario.

The six counties that make up the council are working to share resources and costs.

“As we know, boating activities are significant driver of economic activity, with nearly $100 million being generated from Lake Ontario harbors,” said the Legislators.

“The failure to keep our harbors dredged and open means that boats cannot access our communities and that has a very negative financial impact. Hopefully, other communities that take part in the GLDT can learn from our experience.”
