Calumet Harbor Bedrock Removal Successfully Completed

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Chicago District, has just announced that the Calumet Harbor bedrock removal project is now fully complete.

Work completed recently by Roen Salvage Co. began on May 5, 2019.

According to the Corps, the dynamite blasting and dredging of the dolomite rock from the bottom of Calumet Harbor will ensure the availability of depth in the channel that the Illinois Port.

USACE also added that the authority has authorized, and also improve the transit efficiency of ships and barges that pass through the harbor on a daily basis.

This will prevent/reduce the risk of ships running into or being scrapped by boulders at the bed while transporting cargo.
