Business & Finance

VolkerWessels UK is inviting the public to visit eight of their high-profile construction sites, between 19 – 24 March, as part of Open Doors 2018.

According to the company, the annual event – delivered by Build UK in partnership with The Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) -sees contractors open live construction sites to the public, giving local communities and the next generation a ‘behind the scenes’ look at the wide variety of career opportunities available within the industry.

VolkerStevin will open three sites:

VBA, a joint venture comprising VolkerStevin, Boskalis Westminster and Atkins (part of the SNC-Lavalin Group), is undertaking a project to design and construct a replacement Wave Reflection Wall at Morecambe seafront, on behalf of Lancaster City Council and the Environment Agency. Attendees will also get the chance to visit VolkerBrooks’ specialist facility where pre-cast concrete, formwork and steel fabrication is manufactured.

United Utilities is working in collaboration with C2V+, a Jacobs-CH2M and VolkerStevin joint venture, in delivering the Morecambe Catchment Strategy Project, which involves upgrade work to two sites – Schola Green Wastewater Pumping Station located in Morecambe and the Wastewater Treatment Works site located near Middleton. The two will be connected by a new 7km sewer pipe, to reduce the number of spills from the catchment into Morecambe Bay.

Alan Robertson, Chief Executive Officer of VolkerWessels UK, said: “We are delighted to be involved in Open Doors once again and particularly excited to be opening eight sites across the country this year. The event is a fantastic opportunity for the next generation to see the creativity, dedication and hard work that goes into constructing these local landmarks, and the fantastic career opportunities available.”

Suzannah Nichol, Chief Executive of Build UK, said: “Bookings are now open for Open Doors 2018, which Build UK is running in partnership with CITB for the third year in a row and is set to be another hugely successful event. It is a fantastic opportunity to have a closer look at some of the UK’s most exciting projects and experience what makes construction such a fantastic industry to be a part of.
