The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, and the Lake Pepin Legacy Alliance kicked off an environmental restoration project with a meeting in Red Wing, Minnesota, on June 5.

The project will utilize material dredged by the district in Pool 4 to create islands at the head of Lake Pepin.

The islands will provide habitat and slow erosion, USACE said in its announcement.

Other partners at the meeting included the Minnesota and Wisconsin Departments of Natural Resources (MN DNR, the WI DNR), Audubon and Ducks Unlimited.

Representatives from these organizations, together with Congressman Jason Lewis’ office, discussed project objectives, constraints, available data, concept ideas and the process for moving forward.
