GLDD Almost Halfway Through with Willoughby Spit Nourishment

The Willoughby Spit and Vicinity beach nourishment project has entered into the seventh week of dredging and beach fill operations, reported today the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Norfolk District.

USACE contractor, Great Lakes Dredging and Dock Company, placed 524,396 cubic yards of sand as of April 5, 2017.

According to the Corps, the area between Duffys Lane and Mason Creek Road is next to receive the much needed sand.

Work on this 34.5 million beach nourishment project started back in February 2017 and will be completed this May.

Project Overview:

Put down 1.2 million cubic yards of sand;

Widen the beach by about 60 feet;

Raise the recreational area of the beach;

The project will help protect homes, businesses and recreation areas from waves and flooding during coastal storms.
