The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Philadelphia District announced yesterday its plans to dredge a section of the Upper Chesapeake Bay in late February of 2017.

According to USACE, this maintenance dredging project will be completed by the end of March 2017.

The project area extends from the Sassafras River to Fairlee Creek.

Dredged material will be beneficially reused at the Paul S. Sarbanes Ecosystem Restoration Project at Poplar Island located on the eastern side of the Chesapeake Bay.

Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company, an Illinois firm, has been awarded a $5.8 million contract for dredging of the shipping channel.

This project is part of the Inland Waterway Delaware River to Chesapeake Bay Project, which helps ensure safe and reliable maritime commerce from the Delaware Bay to the Chesapeake.
