The Ministry of Primary Industries said dredging works and the removal of silt and sand forming in the Navua delta would allow for increased flow capacity.
Colonel Mason Smith , the permanent secretary, said: “ The total proposed length of the dredge channel is 3.39 kilometres of which 1.59 kilometres will be inland and 1.80 kilometres will be offshore.”
MPI confirmed in a statement the project was being carried out by China Railway First Group Limited for $4,000,000 and expected to be completed in six months.
“Once the dredging work is completed, it is expected that approximately 500,000m3 of dredged material will be removed from the river which will be dumped at four different dump sites alongside the Navua River,” Smith concluded.
