The City is responsible for maintaining the canal system at Newport Waterways. The tides carry sediment from Deception Bay and the greater Moreton Bay area into the canal system.

The Council carries out regular dredging to remove the built-up sediment so everyone can continue to safely enjoy the canals.

According to the City, the maintenance dredging expected to start in late-February 2025 and will be completed by late-June 2025, subject to weather and other unforeseen circumstances.

The dredging will be carried out in:

  • Kingfisher Canal;
  • Northern Marina Basin;
  • Intersection of Kestrel Canal & Albatross Canal;
  • Curlew Canal;
  • Skua Canal; and
  • Walkers Creek Canal.
