According to their official statement, the park will remain closed while the United States Army Corps of Engineers, New York District, places 1.25 million cubic yards of sand from the Fire Island Inlet onto the shoreline of Gilgo State Park, within the Town of Babylon.

The work is part of the Fire Island Inlet to Montauk Point project, whose objective is to reduce risks associated with coastal storm damage along the Atlantic coast of Long Island, covering the shoreline from Fire Island Inlet to Montauk Point.

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation, and Historic Preservation said the this work is anticipated to continue through the winter into the spring of 2025.
