EXCLUSIVE: Guyana Port Inc. launches new Damen cutter suction dredger

The Guyana Port Inc. (GPI) commissioned its new Damen cutter suction dredger (CSD) 350 during a ceremony at the company’s headquarters, Lot 12 Support, East Bank Demerara, yesterday.

The event, marked under the theme “Shaping the Future of Guyana’s Maritime Industry,” highlighted GPI’s commitment to investing in sustainable dredging operations for Guyana’s future.

At the ceremony, Juan Edghill, Minister of Public Works, put the spotlight on the dredger’s significance in the evolving maritime landscape of Guyana saying that “this investment demonstrates our commitment to modernizing our ports and ensuring they meet international standards.”

According to the Minister, the new dredger will play critical role in keeping waterways navigable, facilitating trade, and supporting the rapid growth of the economy.

Commenting this partnership, Bram Van Der Plas, Area Manager for the Caribbean at Damen Shipyards Group, said: “We are proud to collaborate with GPI in this transformative project. This dredger is a testament to our strong partnership and shared vision for Guyana’s maritime future.”

During the event, the officials stated that effective dredging of rivers and creeks is vital for improving shipping efficiency, promoting economic growth and advancing tourism.
