Trailing suction hopper dredger Xin Hai Xun ready for action

Dredging

Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (ZPMC) said that the dual-fuel-powered trailing suction hopper dredger Xin Hai Xun, also known as the New Sea Sturgeon, has set sail to begin dredging operations, primarily for coastal port dredging, deep-water channel maintenance, and land reclamation.

Measuring 155.7 meters in length and 32 meters in width – about as wide as 15 tennis courts laid side by side – the Xin Hai Xun is a powerhouse. In just 90 minutes, it can dredge enough material to raise the surface of a standard football field by more than 2 meters,” ZPMC said.

Powered by LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas), it reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 20%, nitrogen oxide emissions by over 80%, and virtually eliminates emissions of sulfur oxides and particulate matter.

Built to navigate complex working environments and meet diverse construction needs, this vessel is a significant step forward in green shipping,” the company said.

According to ZPMC, its delivery and commissioning not only fill a gap in the use of clean energy in Chinese dredging ships but also contribute to the development of sustainable shipping practices.
