Starting Monday, September 30, the transfer of 2000m³ of sand will take place over four days, with trucks operating between 7am and 5pm. During this period, Cyril Close beach access will be closed to pedestrians,” said Douglas Shire Council.

Douglas Shire Mayor, Lisa Scomazzon, said that the additional sand is a short-term solution to Newell Beach’s coastal erosion.

Council is exploring funding options for longer-term remediation works to reduce erosion, but the sand replenishment is an effective short-term solution for the beach,” Mayor Scomazzon said.

“This stockpile of sand, removed from the Daintree Ferry channel, will not only restore the beach’s beautiful appearance but also ensure public safety and protect property.”
