For the first time ever, a living shoreline will safeguard a federal levee system. Moffatt & Nichol is responsible for designing the living shoreline that will combat coastal erosion, dissipate wave energy, and adapt to sea level rise.

In addition, the shoreline will nurture native aquatic vegetation creating a nursery habitat for juvenile fish, blue crabs, Gulf Sturgeon, and more.

Stretching from Bucktown Harbor to the Bonnabel Boat Launch, the living shoreline will consist of nine curved rock jetties.

They will provide an added layer of protection for the levees and allow up to 35 acres of marshland and other habitat to be restored.
