The Honolulu District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, is responsible for maintaining the project depths in the federal limits of Kaunakakai Harbor.

The purpose of the maintenance dredging is to remove sediment that has accumulated over time, so vessels that deliver food, fuel, and supplies to the island of Molokai may safely enter, exit, and maneuver within the harbor.

Overall, the project includes mechanical clamshell dredging of approx. 150,000 CY of material and transporting it to the Kahului Offshore Dredged Material Disposal Site.
