Southsea Coastal Scheme – Winter 2021 newsletter

Local authorities have just released Winter 2021 Newsletter for the Southsea Coastal Scheme.

The start of the scheme, UK’s largest local authority-led coastal defences’ project worth more than £100M, was the culmination of seven years of work including wide-ranging public consultation.

Some of the highlights since the September launch include:

• TSHD Sospan Dau visited the site to ‘rainbow’ gravel to create two working platforms in November and December;
• The Long Curtain Moat makeover was completed in October;
• Significant piling work on the frontage 1 beach was also completed in December;
• Compounds were set up on Pier Road, Clarence Pier Playing Field and on the Clarence Pier carpark;
• The Solent Local Enterprise Partnership granted £5m funding towards frontage 1 development;
• Effective (online) consultation was held on accessibility/disability issues and enhancements along the seafront with our community stakeholder engagement group;
• Working conditions were made safe for all employees and visitors as the crews continue LONG CURTAIN MOAT to deal with COVID-19 restrictions;

This year, the work under the Southsea Coastal Scheme will continue on frontage 1 and completion of the detailed engineering design for frontage 4 is also expected, according to the officials.

The entire scheme that will reduce the risk of flooding to more than 10,000 homes and 700 businesses is anticipated to be complete in 2026.
